WIP Update 001 – Netherearth

I had to take a break from the Mahtradors, I just had to. Smack in the middle of the Bitch King I just decided I need a break. Then the question begged – “Well then, what the hell do I do?”

The answer, of course, was “demons”.

Don’t get me wrong, I am still writing for the Mahtradors and The Age of Waking Death series is NOT on an indefinite hiatus. Alongside this WIP I have continued writing the Bitch King but my inspiration well was running dry. I did not want to finish it just for the sake of it being done. I want the damn thing to actually be good.

I have found my salvation in my latest WIP entitled “Netherearth”. My story content has returned with renewed richness, my characters feel alive again, and I might actually have a plot to this one. (LE GASP).

There are a few things about this story that I feel my faithful readers will connect to instantly. For instance…

  • It takes place in Dragoloth
  • There is a Mahtrador character (a brand new one)
  • It is as dark and intricate as my former works, just served up in a new way
  • It features some characters you have met / will meet in The Hollow Living / The Bitch King / Baron of Blood.
  • There is, of course, all of the gay relationships.

In other words, the territory is not entirely unfamiliar. This is not another one of my alien, standalone projects. It is relevant to the Age of Waking Death timeline and to Dragoloths’s history.

What I think will appeal to both faithful and new readers alike…

  • You see a different side of Dragoloth (I actually ventured out of the castle for this one)
  • Almost none of the characters are noble or royal (only 2 so far, I believe), a brand new experience for me in this universe.
  • Only one of the characters is Verian. There is much more racial variety amongst this cast (faeries, elves, humans, demons, etc…)
  • At least three characters so far are transgender. While I myself identify as trans*, this is the first time I have ever written for trans* characters in Dragoloth so explicitly.
  • It is full of surreal dreamscapes and hellscapes, something I’ve never before explored my full potential for.
  • DEMONS!
  • As I have ventured from royalty in this book, I have also ventured from the mainstream pantheon. Saldon, Morre, and Azrael have brief mention in this work. But there is more mention of minor more folklorish gods (i.e. Tieres, the god of the sea).

So there you have it. I will try to keep better progress updates about this story here, since I haven’t had a lot to talk about lately and I’m completely obsessed with this story now that I’m nearly past that initial first 20,000 word hump. By the way, I feel it worth mentioning that I have been maintaining a consistent writing pace through an elaborate (not really) connection between my computer word documents, Dropbox, and Jotterpad on my phone. So once again, if you’re an especially busy author (or you’re just like me and you don’t feel like toting your computer around the house or juggling it while feeding a baby) then consider Jotterpad for your phone or tablet.

It may sound like a joke but I have seriously clocked in 1,000 words on my little Android phone in a sitting, so it’s a legitimate tool for making serious progress.

AND BEFORE I FORGET you can keep track of my progress further by reading all of my chapter updates for free on Wattpad . I will be updating it at least once a week if not more often. Cheers!

It had to have been fate, Anthony reasoned. There was no way that a woman as rare and lovely as this had just fallen into his lap by chance.

After his conversation with Pheseus had started to turn sour, Anthony had decided to step out into the garden in hopes that the fresh air would cleanse his palate. It eased his mind, but not his nerves. The past few days’ worth of apprehension was not so easily shrugged off his shoulders. Roses could only accomplish so much.

Of course, that was before he saw them – a pair of fine girls like decorative songbirds hardly a leap away, and she the prettiest of them. Their skin was the color of roasted almonds. Their necks were long and they had the same delicate, slender fingers. Yet it was there that their similarities halted. The one had admired had hair the color of cobalt, and rather than fine it was coarse like a horse’s mane. Her eyes were a deep, dark brown – almost black. The other girl, who he could only assume to be her sister, was the exact opposite. Her hair was the color of pale morning sunlight and her eyes were bright, dewy green. Neither girl spoke very much. That, he liked.

“Your pardon, my ladies,” he greeted them as he approached. “What a sight for sore eyes you are. Here I was, about to compliment my gardener on his exquisite taste in decoration. You must imagine how pleased I am to see that you are not painted statues – but flesh and bone nymphs. And I am endlessly enchanted.”

AUDIOBOOK Progress Report!

Wow, it’s only been a few days… and I can’t believe I have progress to report on these audiobooks!

Baron of Blood and Mr. Fingers officially have readers. If you want to check out the voices behind the projects, check out the pages of Matt Butcher (Mr. Fingers) and Martin Esposito (Baron of Blood). Baron of Blood is already WELL underway and will hopefully be finished by the first two weeks of February. Mr. Fingers will probably be done sooner than that. As you can imagine… I am very excited and grateful to have this opportunity to reach out to even more of my readers!

The Dragon’s Disciples, The Heretic Priest, and The Hollow Living are still in need of readers. If you are interested in auditioning, it is not too late! I am open to both male and female auditions (and it’s FREE to make the account!)

“The Bitch King” is going to be up for pre-order soon. Have I mentioned that? And by SOON I mean the NEXT COUPLE OF DAYS soon! Of course, just because it’s up for pre-order doesn’t mean that it’s going to be released that quickly. I want to give myself at least a month or two to build up some orders before I launch the book itself. You only have to wait a little bit longer!

What is next? After “The Bitch King” the Age of Waking Death series will continue with “The Queen of Nothing” and then, lastly, “The Final Knell”. Cover releases will be here shortly (and by shortly, probably within the next fifteen minutes as I procrastinate on business).

Audiobook Auditions Open!

Makeup DIY – Contouring Creme

This has nothing to do with writing at all, you guys, I’m sorry.

But I totally just successfully made my own contouring creme. Usually, I’m not into makeup DIY’s (sometimes the ingredients cost me more than just buying the product I need). But I just so happened to already have everything I needed in the house and chances are, so do you! If you don’t have everything, the ingredients are pretty cheap and easy to attain.

So I had to make my own contouring creme because…

  1. A lot of you have probably noticed I am pale AF. Bronzers don’t do anything other than make me look gross and more refined sculpting powders are out of my price range at the moment.
  2. Powders and I don’t get along very well. I need a creme because it’s easier for me to build up the color I need and blend, also because (especially in the winter) my skin is super dry.

I’ll stop rambling now and get to the ingredients.

You Will Need…

  • A carrier oil (coconut oil, olive oil, something like that. I used almond oil that I already had (which doubles as my daily makeup remover!))
  • A loose powder (or a pressed powder that you don’t mind breaking up) in the color that best meets your needs.
  • Beeswax (or I suppose any similar wax would do)
  • A heat source (I used a candle)
  • A metal spoon or little container to do all of your melting in
  • Something to mix your ingredients in
  • A little (clean) container to put your new product in
  • Any other various measuring spoons and utensils to make your life easier.

Btw. This is a messy project, but it has a fairy easy and quick cleanup.

Everything together pretty much looked like this.

Everything together pretty much looked like this.

I used a soapstone mortar and pestle that I used for mixing, and trust me it is SO MUCH EASIER to clean out that soapstone. But use whatever you have available.

I didn’t have any loose pigments (because I am poor) so I ended up using two different pressed ones. I used Wet n’ Wild’s MegaGlo in “Spotlight Peach” which was a liiiitle bit too pink, so I added in a few shavings of Wet n’ Wild’s ColorIcon bronzer in what I think was “Reserve Your Cabana” (but I’m too lazy to go into the other room and check). The ColorIcon is like, $2.99 at Walgreens and I think the MegaGlo is like $4.29 or something like that.

So the first thing I did was break up my powders. I completely de-potted the MegaGlo (and would later use the empty pot for the new product) by breaking it up a little and then scraping it out. I continued to break it up until it was as fine as I could get it (I used the edge of a plastic spoon for this, in the interest of washing as few utensils as possible.

blog2(1)

Then I added in a little bit of the bronzer. I did this just by taking the other end of the plastic spoon and rubbing it across the surface until I was satisfied with the amount I had.

blog2

Then I swatchy-swatched the powder to make sure I had the color I wanted.

blog3

Brilliant lighting! (No.)

Once I had that done, I set it aside and went ahead and measured out my oil (I used about 1-2 tsp) and put it in my mortar. Then I took about (1/4 tsp) of beeswax in a metal spoon and melted it over a candle. About halfway through this project my candle crapped out on me and I had to resort to using the lighter. For three thrilling seconds I thought that this must be what it’s like to use heroin (no, not even close, I’m sure).

Then I quickly mixed my powder, oil, and melted wax together. There are no pictures of this process because the wax was already starting to set again. Once I had finished mixing, I actually had to gather up the new product and heat it again before pouring it into the pot to get it as smooth as possible.

It took me doing all of this twice to fill up my pot completely. Depending on the size of your container, your experience may differ.

I put the container of product in the fridge for 30 minutes to help it set. These pictures are of before it went into the fridge.

blog6

The product looks a little gnarly in the container, but it is smooth and applies wonderfully and cream-ily (?) (Let’s just make up words, Cy). I tried to smooth it out the best I could, but I’m sure with practice and fewer pauses in between filling up the container you could get it to look all nice and professional.

I’ll let you guys know how well it works out for me as a contouring creme. I know it looks super dark (and it is super pigmented when it goes on) but never underestimate my ability to blend.

My mortar and pestle, almond oil, and beeswax were all found at the Sojourner in Greenville, NC. They are conveniently having a sale from now until December 1st so if you are in the neighborhood, you can swing by, pick up the ingredients and try this for yourself!

October Interviews: Brisha and Raul

———————

Brisha: WAIT WAIT WAIT. We don’t even get our own days?

Me: No.

Raul: Why not?

Me: You’re not interesting enough.

Brisha: EXCUSE YOU.

Raul: Maybe BRISHA isn’t interesting….

Me: Oh gods…

Brisha: I – what?! I am SO interesting!

Raul: Not interesting enough to generate a good comeback.

Me: I AM STARTING THE INTERVIEW YOU GUYS THE MIC IS ON NOW!!!

——–

Did you two ever get along?

Raul: Define “get along”.

Brisha: We get along fine, but just because we are twins doesn’t mean we have many common interests..

Raul: Our bond was mostly forged on the basis that we are both the youngest in the family, and the most attention we were ever going to receive was from each other, and we recognized that.

What was it like growing up the youngest children?

Brisha: Being young and acknowledged as illegitimate is no fun…

Raul: As if it made a difference to you. You’re a woman. All you had to do was embroider. I am a man and I was consistently held back from competing with my elder brothers…

Brisha: At least father knew I existed.

Raul: only because you annoyed him so constantly that he could never forget you…

Me: MOVING ON-

Both of you, who did you get along with most in the family?

Brisha: Each other.

Raul: Yes. Sadly. Each other.

Brisha: Pharun is hardly ever around. And too ridiculous.

Raul: Shrukian is too full of himself. And Olympia is as engaging as an old history book.

Brisha: *adding* In a language you’ve never studied.

Raul: Or barely studied but are too lazy to understand.

Brisha, what do you think about Olympia?

Brisha: I think she is a trollop with no special talents. She wanders around the castle all day and just waits on her next opportunity to bang Shrukian. And if she isn’t in his bed then she’s torturing servants, and there’s only so much screaming one can take in the room next to yours.

Raul, do you have any regrets?

Raul: My regret is that I have a twin.

Brisha: D:< !!!

Raul: More seriously, one of my greatest regrets is allowing myself to be consumed by a foolish pursuit that ultimately served to only get me killed.

Raul, what was it like leaving your family behind?

Raul: Fairly liberating. I did not have a great attachment to any of them, and I didn’t care if or whether I saw any of them again.

October Interviews: Malhii

Do you miss youth?

What a dumbass question.

Me: HEY! Be nice!!

Of course I miss being young. Do you think having skin that snags on chipped vessels like a piece of wrinkly old cloth is fun? I don’t miss the days of my youth, but I do miss being able to feel like I can still pursue and seduce someone on a merit besides my power.

Describe your first experience with love/lust?

My first experience was a painful one, because it ran so deeply and was cut off so soon. And it was love, there was no doubt about that. I was in love with a young boy whose father had defaulted on his debts. My father, the baron Ivan Clieous, destroyed the family and divided up some of the members as slaves. Atlas, the one I loved, originally belonged to my brother. But Igarth is the sort of person no one can ever love. Atlas was the reason I was forced to leave Drakkian Province.

Why did you become a priest?

Because I tried being a schoolteacher, and they almost hung me over it.

Seriously.

When Atlas was alive and we had been forced to leave my home, I ended up in Dragoloth and practiced as a school teacher for boys. With my history, you can imagine just how well that went. After nearly being lynched by the town, Atlas and I were forced to lay low. It was during that time that he became very ill and I was not able to properly care for him. Once he died, I buried him and became a priest. I had to give myself something to be devoted to, a reason to live, or I would have killed myself.

Do you ever hold your saving Pharun’s life over his head?

Of course. This kind of relates to question #1, mostly because these days that is the only way to get him to come to bed with me. It was so much easier when I was the more powerful of the two of us.

Me: I threw up a little in my mouth.

What?

Me: This is the ickiest interview I have had to sit through…
